Tourist Information
The least affected part of the country is the capital, Luanda. There is a substantial security apparatus in the oil industry ports of Cabinda, Soyo and Lobito/Benguela. The southern coastal province of Namibe is also relatively safe. Armed UNITA groups regularly probe the defences of the major coastal cities and visitors are advised against travelling by road beyond the city environs. They should also be alert and careful at all time, particularly after dark, in Luanda and other cities. Crime levels, including armed hold-ups, are high.
Homosexuality is illegal. It is inadvisable to photograph public places, public buildings or public events.
