Yellow fever certificate is required by travellers from infected areas. High risk of HIV/AIDS. Cholera, malaria, rabies, bilharzia (schistosomiasis), hepatitis A and B present. Immunisation against typhoid is recommended and polio vaccination should be up-to-date. Water should be boiled or sterilised before drinking, as should milk as it is unpasteurised. Avoid dairy products which are likely to have been made from unboiled milk. Only eat well-cooked meat and fish. Vegetables should be cooked and fruit should be peeled.
Outbreaks of avian influenza (bird flu) in 2004 and 2005 resulted in a small number of fatalities but this is a low risk. As a precaution avoid places where you may come into contact with domestic or wild birds and ensure poultry and egg dishes are cooked thoroughly.
